Head Teacher’s Welcome
OJS began in 1999 as a small tutorial group for Japanese heritage children. Over the years numbers have grown steadily and we now have over 90 students, of whom around half are non-Japanese. OJS is managed by a non-remunerated board of trustees and registered with the Charity Commission.
We have weekly classes and our maximum student to teacher ratio is six to one. Pupils are grouped according to proficiency, age, individual goals and any other relevant considerations.
We use a range of textbooks, some approved by the Japanese government for the national education system, others written in English or created by our own dedicated teachers. For older age groups, we provide GCSE and A-level support.
In addition to our weekly classes, we hold two Cultural Days each year to provide enjoyable opportunities for our pupils and their families to experience Japanese culture, while also helping to foster a warm and vibrant school community. We firmly believe that learning about other cultures enables our students to contribute to a more tolerant, sensitive and accepting society.
We look forward to welcoming you to Oxford Japanese School!
